21 - DOE Status: Accepting Applications Job Description Work involves emergency response, fire suppression, rescue, emergency life support, salvage, fire prevention, and a variety of other assigned duties associated with fire and rescue.
Work involves risk and hazardous exposure.
Job Responsibilities Responds to fire and rescue calls to perform a full range of fire suppression duties as well as basic life support emergency care Provides immediate emergency care to ill or injured persons; assesses condition of patients and administers emergency interventions Assists with advanced life support unit operations Drives, operates and maintains fire, rescue and EMS apparatus and equipment; inspects and cleans on a regular basis and performs minor repair; operates pumps, aerial ladders and auxiliary equipment Performs salvage and overhaul operations Performs rescue from hazardous sires such as auto accidents and collapsed buildings Performs routine clerical and administrative functions such as preparing reports and training materials Assists with public information presentations on fire safety, injury prevention, available services and what to do in case of an emergency Assists with pre-fire planning and company level fire inspections of selected occupancies Performs daily maintenance activities in and around the fire station including dusting, floor maintenance, clean-up of apparatus, equipment, hose, tools and appliances Checks mechanical operation of emergency vehicles; cleans and decontaminates vehicles both inside and out; checks and maintains assigned equipment; assures supplies and other expendables are maintained at the desired level Performs job safety in accordance with department safety procedures.
Operates equipment safely and reports unsafe work conditions or practices to a supervisor Attends training programs in emergency medical services and techniques both at the assigned station and other locations; reviews and studies current literature; maintains all appropriate certifications Attends training programs in fire related topics both at the assigned station and other locations; reviews and studies current literature; maintains all appropriate certifications Conducts training sessions for other response personnel and the public; develops training aids and programs; repairs and maintains training aids Knowledge, Skills and Abilities EMT/Firefighter - Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and methods of modern Fire and EMS functions and operations; general knowledge of maintenance procedures for Fire and EMS apparatus and equipment; general knowledge of applicable ordinances and State laws relating to Fire and EMS; Ability to attend training Ability to communicate ideas clearly, concisely and effectively Ability to understand, follow and give oral and written directions Good mechanical aptitude Ability to plan, assign, instruct and coordinate the work of others Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships Ability to demonstrate strong leadership and supervisory skills High School Diploma or equivalent Possession at all times a valid, Virginia driver's license with an acceptable driving record Currently hold and maintain certification or equivalent in the following: Basic Cardiac Life Support (Health Care Provider CPR) EVOC Class III Virginia Emergency Medical Technician Virginia Department of Fire Programs Fighter II Virginia Department of Fire Programs Hazardous Materials Operations EMT/Firefighter - Advanced Cardiac Life Support Pediatric Advanced Life Support or equivalent Within 1 year: Virginia Department of Fire Programs Basic Pump Operator or driver Pump Operator Virginia Department of Fire Programs Rural Water Supply ICS 100, 200, 700, 800 Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support or equivalent Physical Requirements Frequent driving Frequent night and weekend duties Frequent exposure to potentially hazardous physical stress, fire, adverse weather and hazardous substance Subject to inside and outside conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils, exposure to bloodborn pathagens and wearing self-contained breathing apparatus Regular contact with the public, external civic and volunteer organizations; volunteer fire officers and various government agencies Performs duties during emergency training or station activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold or smoke Requires frequent lifting and/or moving up to 40 pounds and occasionally lifting and/or moving up to 125 pounds Operates in a highly stressful environment with significant exposure to disability injuries Requires walking, running, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling over terrain and buildings Additional Information Must successfully complete the post-offer employment medical examination, drug screening and background investigation The following certifications must be obtained within the specific time frame of the assignment and maintained throughout employment: Within one (1) year in assigned position: Virginia Department of Fire Programs Basic Pump Operator or Driver Pump Operator Virginia Department of Fire Programs Rural Water Supply ICS 100, 200, 700, 800 Application Special Instructions Applicants must Include copies of current EMS, Fire and EVOC certifications and a DMV record with their application.
